Albufeira in brief

The Romans called this coastal settlement Baltum and built roads, bridges and aqueducts here. Its modern name comes from the Arabic al-Bu?ayra, "the lagoon", from the Moorish period that began in the 8th century. King Afonso III took Albufeira in 1249 and granted it to the Order of Aviz in 1250. King Manuel I gave the town its charter (foral) on 20 August 1504. In the early 20th century it lived on exports of fish and nuts; tourism grew from the 1960s, and Albufeira became a city on 23 August 1986.

Albufeira today

The city lies on the Atlantic coast of the Algarve, 45 km from Faro. Its emblem is the 19th-century Clock Tower (Torre do Rel?gio) with its wrought-iron crown, and the main Church of Nossa Senhora da Concei??o (1782) was consecrated in 1800. The municipality also has Albufeira Castle, Paderne Castle and a lighthouse. The whitewashed Old Town neighbours the lively Strip at Areias de S?o Jo?o, and in 2025 Albufeira was Portugal's second most popular destination by overnight stays.
