Chongqing: from its first name to today

The Chongqing area is historically linked to the State of Ba, and the Qin general Zhang Yi named the city Jiangzhou. In 581 it became Yu Prefecture, and Yu is still the city's abbreviation. The current name dates from 1189: Chongqing means "double celebration", marking the enthronement of Emperor Guangzong. In 1891 it became the first inland port open to foreign trade, and from 1937 to 1946 it served as the provisional capital of the Republic of China. On 14 March 1997 it was separated from Sichuan as a direct-administered municipality.

Notable people of Chongqing

Chongqing is associated with Olympic diving champion Tian Liang, pianist Li Yundi, computer scientist Xia Peisu and animator and director Domee Shi. Since 2002 it has been a sister city of Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine.

Chongqing today

The city centre is built on hills between the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, crossed by so many bridges that Chongqing is called China's bridge capital. Highlights include the UNESCO-listed Dazu Rock Carvings, dating back to the 7th century, the ancient town of Ciqikou, Hongya Cave, the Three Gorges Museum and the Ming-era Luohan Temple. The city is famous for spicy hot pot and the world's longest monorail, with 70 stations. Order a bouquet online from anywhere and we will deliver it to the given address in Chongqing.
