Cluj-Napoca: from Roman Napoca to today
Cluj-Napoca traces its roots to Roman Napoca, founded around 106 after Trajan's conquest of Dacia; Hadrian made it a municipium, and it later became capital of Dacia Porolissensis. The present name first appears in 1213 as Castrum Clus. On 19 August 1316 King Charles I of Hungary granted Cluj city status for the Saxons' help against the rebel voivode Ladislaus K?n. Delegates from Cluj attended the Alba Iulia assembly that proclaimed the union of Transylvania with Romania on 1 December 1918, and in 1974 "Napoca" was added to the city's name.
Notable people of Cluj-Napoca
Matthias Corvinus (1443–1490), King of Hungary and Croatia from 1458, was born here in 1443 and in 1488 reformed the hundred-member city council. Romanian actor Florin Piersic (born 1936) is also a native.
