A short history of Haifa
The earliest settlement here was the port of Tell Abu Hawam, founded in the 14th century BCE. Haifa itself first appears in Talmudic texts around the 3rd century CE as a fishing village producing purple dye from sea snails. Crusaders took it in 1100 or 1101, and in the 13th century the Carmelite order arose on Mount Carmel. In the 1760s Daher al-Umar, ruler of Acre and the Galilee, moved and walled the town, marking the start of modern Haifa. German Templers founded the German Colony in 1868, the remains of the B?b were laid on Mount Carmel in 1909, and construction of the Technion began in 1912.
