What to know about Kamianske

The village of Kamianske was first recorded in 1750, when construction of the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos began; the Zaporozhian settlements of Karnaukhivka and Trytuzne already stood nearby. Its industrial era began in 1887, when the South Russian Dnieper Metallurgical Society started building what was then the largest steelworks, today Kamet-Steel, and the first blast furnace was fired in 1889. From 1889 to 1903 the works were run by managing director Ignacy Jasiukowicz. The factory settlement became a town in 1917, with status confirmed again on 19 December 1923. Renamed Dniprodzerzhynsk in 1936, the city regained its historical name Kamianske in 2016 after public hearings. In 1994 it opened a bridge across the Dnipro, the longest bridge crossing in Ukraine at over 8.5 km.

Notable people of Kamianske

Natives include graphic artist Robert Lisovskyi (1893–1982), designer of the Lufthansa emblem, Mykola Brusentsov (1925–2014), who designed the world's first ternary computer, footballer Hennadii Lytovchenko (1963), best footballer of the USSR in 1984, and gymnast Oleksandr Vorobiov (1984), Olympic bronze medallist in Beijing.

The city lies on the shores of the Kamianske Reservoir on the middle Dnipro, below the Middle Dnipro hydroelectric dam, 35 km from Dnipro. Sights include St Nicholas Roman Catholic Church (1897), St Nicholas Cathedral, the former factory church of 1896, St Nicholas Church in Trytuzne (1820), the Lesya Ukrainka Music and Drama Theatre (founded 1935) and the City History Museum, the largest of Kamianske's 19 museums.
