Kryvyi Rih: from a Cossack winter camp to the capital of Kryvbas

Kryvyi Rih was first listed in 1734 among the villages and winter camps of the Pereviz palanka, and in 1771 the headquarters of the Zaporozhian Host stood here. The official founding date is 8 May 1775, when Kryvyi Rih appeared in the list of post stations along the Inhulets from Kremenchuk to Kherson. The turning point came in 1866, when Oleksandr Pol found rich iron ore in the Dubova gully: the Saksahan mine opened in 1881, the Kateryninska railway arrived in 1884, and by 1897 Kryvbas outproduced the Urals. Kryvyi Rih became a city on 26 February 1919.

Notable people of Kryvyi Rih

The city's very first monument, a bronze bust of 1896, honours Oleksandr Pol, who discovered the local ore. Tennis player Kateryna Bondarenko (1986), swimmer, coach and commentator Serhii Fesenko (1959), boxer Yevhen Khytrov (1988) and writer Liubov Holota (1949) were born here.

Kryvyi Rih today

The city lies where the Inhulets meets the Saksahan and is the centre of the Kryvyi Rih iron ore basin, Ukraine's seventh-largest city by population and second by area. Favourite meeting spots include Europe's largest flower clock in Heroes Park (a 22-metre dial planted with 22,000 flowers), the compass-shaped musical fountain by the city hall, the Cossack Kryvyi Rih monument, the Eagle's Nest rocks and the Taras Shevchenko Theatre, opened in 1931.
