Nikopol: a short history
Nikopol began as the Cossack crossing of Mykytyn Rih, described by envoy Erich Lassota in 1594. In 1639–1652 it was the site of the Mykytyn Sich: Bohdan Khmelnytskyi arrived here in 1647, the Cossacks routed the Crown garrison in January 1648, and in early February he was elected hetman here. Called Sloviansk in 1775–1782, the town was renamed Nikopol, "city of Nikita", in 1782; manganese mining from 1886 made it an industrial centre. In 2025 Nikopol was awarded the honorary title Hero City of Ukraine.
Famous people from Nikopol
Natives include gymnast Polina Kondaurova, 2007 Universiade champion, world climbing champion Olha Shalahina, conductor and composer Al Goodman (1890–1972) and art historian Anatolii Ivanytskyi. Athlete and soldier Serhii Sova (1986–2022), posthumous Hero of Ukraine, was also born here.
Nikopol today
The city stands on the right bank of the Dnipro by the Kakhovka Reservoir and is the fourth-largest in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Victory Park marks the site of the Mykytyn Sich; other landmarks include the river and railway (1905) stations, the Transfiguration Cathedral and the 1827 Church of the Nativity in Sulytske.
