Torrevieja: a short history
Torrevieja takes its name from an old watchtower, surrounded by only scattered cottages until the early 1800s. In 1803 King Charles IV moved the salt administration here, and a town grew around it. An 1829 earthquake destroyed Torrevieja, but it was quickly rebuilt, and through the 19th and 20th centuries its salt was shipped out mostly by Swedish and Dutch vessels. Alfonso XIII granted city status in 1931. Between 1991 and 2011 the population grew from about 25,000 to nearly 100,000. The city has a notable Ukrainian community: on 25 November 2013 the mayor and Ukraine's Consul General opened Ukraine Street in Los Balcones, marking the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor.
